About Grainger
Second-generation stone, in Essex County since 2008.
Robert Grainger started the shop in 2008 after years working with his father. In-house design, in-house build, no subs on the stone work. We size the project to the yard and the budget, we show up when we say we will, and we leave the site cleaner than we found it.

What we build
The projects we're known for.
Our four busiest. Each one quoted flat after a site walk, built with proper drainage and proper engineering, and backed by our in-house team.
- 01
Paver patios & walkways
Natural bluestone, travertine, or clay-paver patios and walkways designed to drain, cured on a properly compacted base, and set to hold up through the Essex County winters. Patterns matched to the house, borders considered, every joint tight.
- Bluestone patio & walkway
- Clay & concrete pavers
- Travertine pool decks
- Permeable installations
- 02
Retaining walls
From a 2-ft garden border to a 6-ft engineered wall holding back a hillside, we design and build dry-stack natural stone and segmental block walls that stay plumb for decades. Proper drainage, proper backfill, proper engineering stamp where required.
- Dry-stack natural stone
- Segmental block
- Boulder & fieldstone
- Engineered walls > 4ft
- 03
Steps, stoops & entries
Front steps that match the house. Bluestone treads with mortared or dry-set risers, replaced stone stoops, new porch landings. We rebuild sinking entries without disturbing more of the house than we have to.
- Bluestone treads
- Front stoop rebuilds
- Side entries
- Porch & landing repair

Firepits & outdoor fireplaces
A good firepit extends the season six weeks on each end. We build wood-burning and gas firepits — round, square, or custom — plus full stone-veneer outdoor fireplaces and pizza ovens. Permits, gas line coordination, all handled.
- Wood-burning firepits
- Gas firepits w/ pan + burner
- Outdoor fireplaces

Testimonials
What Bloomfield says.
-
“We put in a bluestone patio with a firepit and some seat walls. Robert walked the yard with us before anything was drawn, Katie drew up a plan that showed us exactly what it would look like, and Luis's crew built it clean and square. Two Essex County winters later, zero movement. Call these people.”
David K. Homeowner · Montclair -
“Our chimney was failing — crown cracked, bricks spalling. Grainger rebuilt the crown, repointed the top courses, and matched the old brick so you can't tell what's new. Project priced flat, done in two days, and they left the roof cleaner than they found it.”
Melissa F. Homeowner · Glen Ridge -
“We needed a serious retaining wall on a sloped front yard. They brought in an engineer where the height required it, built it dry-stack with proper drainage, and it's dead plumb a year in. The result is better looking than I imagined.”
Ravi S. Homeowner · West Orange -
“Backyard transformation — big patio, firepit, path to the garage. Everything held up through this winter without a crack or shift. Katie was great on design and the crew was polite to the neighbors through the whole project.”

FAQ
Common questions, Bloomfield.
Everything we hear most about residential masonry in Essex County. If you'd rather just ask, give us a call.
Do you serve Bloomfield?
Yes. Bloomfield is on our regular Essex County route — site walks within the week most of the season, builds scheduled 3–6 weeks out depending on the project. We work across Downtown, Watsessing, Brookdale, Wrights and the surrounding area.
What kinds of projects do you take on?
Residential masonry, start to finish — paver and bluestone patios, retaining walls (natural stone and engineered block), front stoops and steps, stone-veneer facades and chimneys, outdoor fireplaces, firepits, concrete driveways, and the masonry repair work that keeps older Essex County homes solid. We don't do structural masonry or new-build foundations — those we hand off to specialists.
How does your pricing work?
Flat project quote, given after a site walk — not a per-foot menu. We measure, discuss materials and layout with you, and send one all-in number: labor, materials, equipment rental, dumpster, cleanup. Change orders only if you change the scope or we hit something unexpected underground, and we always talk it through before continuing.
How long does a typical patio take?
A 300-sq-ft bluestone patio with firepit — about 5-7 working days from first excavation to final sweep. Larger multi-level jobs 2-3 weeks. We schedule weather windows carefully and don't start if we can't finish base prep before rain.
Do you handle permits and engineering?
Yes. Retaining walls over 4 feet, structural wall-work, and some driveway work require permits and sometimes an engineer's stamp. We pull the permits, coordinate inspections, and manage the engineering. Timeline for engineered walls is a couple weeks longer; we build that into the quote.
What materials do you work with?
Full-color bluestone (natural cleft and thermal finish), travertine, clay pavers (Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Unilock), concrete pavers, segmental block (Versa-Lok, Allan Block), natural fieldstone and ledgestone, dimensional cut stone, and quality manufactured stone veneer. We'll walk through samples at the design meeting.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Grainger Stoneworks is NJ Home Improvement licensed and carries general liability + workers' comp. We can send the certificate before we show up if your HOA, lender, or township asks.
Will the install mess up my lawn?
There's always some lawn impact — heavy equipment access and material staging. We protect what we can with plywood tracks, re-seed disturbed areas when we're done, and sometimes bring in sod for the worst spots. We walk through all of this at the planning stage so there are no surprises.
